We need to mitigate risks, recognize gaps and prepare for the worst so we are at our best.
Let us not waste this precious gift of time we have to prepare.
Dear Team POP - Preparedness Over Panic,
I need your help to make realistic steps that will mitigate the physical and financial harm that will inevitably result in our community from this global crisis.
My role in this is to brainstorm, design, orchestrate, and collaborate. I need teams of people to do that effectively. I am calling on you.
Email me to join an area of focus (listed below) - email@example.com
TEAM: IDEAS, DESIGN & PLANNING:
We need to design these systems. That takes designer minds, educators, and administrators. We need to write documents and proposals and help organize the resources we have. If you feel this is something you can do, then please join this team. Nothing will function without this cog in the system running smoothly.
TEAM: ADMINISTRATION & FINANCE
We need to consolidate numbers, write emails and make phone calls. Join this team if you think you can help.
TEAM: EDUCATION, AWARENESS & ADVOCATION
Update: Government / Bernews have maintained regular updates. Our Covid Facts Blog has updated more in depth scientific information. More is needed to develop educational materials going forward. Misinofrmation continues to be a huge issue.
There is severe miseducation that will result in chaos and viral spread if we do not educate our people. We need to produce facts in forms that all ages can comprehend and minimize the harm that the de-education and downplaying of this pandemic has caused globally.
- We need to consolidate and update information - We need to produce press releases, posts and posters
- We need graphic designers to create infographics and consolidate information
- We need to develop networks with existing structures to distribute information
TEAM: FOOD SECURITY
Update: Chris Faria, Stratton Hatfield, and Tara Sapien are collaborating to build out these options. More assistance required to minimize food waste from grocery stores. Stay tuned for an update in an upcoming blog.
MINIMIZING FOOD WASTE:
Organizing getting the food that will spoil soon from the farmers / grocery stores and restaurants to families in need. - The farmers / grocery stores / restaurants need to be contacted. - The family center would maybe has a list of families in need. - I am creating a sign up online. - We need delivery systems to deliver. - We need everyone to understand that things need to be disinfected. - Then packaged and dropped off at the door with no contact. - Receivers should take extra steps to disinfect exterior of package too. - All this information needs to be written/ printed/ posted / provided.
LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION:
With zero food security and the likelihood of a global recession rising, we need to find local ways to feed our people. I hope to refer to greater minds on this subject and how to get the ball rolling. Please contribute ideas. - Air layering fruit trees for earlier harvest. (Minimum time to act as heat proposes challenges) - Order seeds / assess what seeds are currently on island. - Mobilize individuals that are willing and able to grow food on their property. - Start seedings sooner rather than later. - Assess government land that could be appropriated so that we can prepare a proposal - Discussing risk mitigation with farmers to ensure meat and dairy industries are not at risk if imported feed becomes unavailable.
TEAM: EMERGENCY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
UPDATE: A lot of people making masks. But make sure whatever you use it's an effective version that ideally protects you as well as others.
See our blog specifically all about masks.
You can make a mask and look like a ninja instead of a pandemic polly. You can make an pretty good one from a bra or material. (citric acid is used as a disinfectant.)
I don't know if Bermuda has been able to order more ventilators, though it seems we won't come to triage measures at this point, luckily... but there is a global shortage.
Other islands or remote areas may benefit from this research being done.
- Research. Figure this out in detail. - Make a list of parts. - Build one. - Teach others how to build.
What else is needed in a triage situation? Goggles? Plastic visors?
What are we at risk of needing? What items are we facing a global shortage?
3-d Printing for supplies. What could we need?. What files do we need to have on hand?
Update: It seems this is mostly under control at this point but wait times are lagging. Might be beneficial to figure out how to streamline the process for these teams.
People need supplies delivered. We will need coordinators and deliverers.
It'd be ideal to collaborate with existing structures like Sargasso and Drop It.
